Wine -- Shiraz Is Aussies' True Standout

Last week we spotlighted some excellent value wines starring Australia's No. 2 grape, chardonnay. Today we look at the country's true strength and shining star, shiraz.

First, a word about the word. Shiraz is exactly the same grape as syrah. There is some vague connection to the Persian city of Shiraz, but the main thing to remember is that syrah is what the French call it, and shiraz is the name used in Australia.

Elsewhere, winemakers who want to imitate a French style (such as California's famous Rhone Rangers) will usually call their wine syrah. But if you spot a California or ...
