Man's Legs Crushed in Elevator Shaft

A District man's legs and feet were crushed yesterday when a 5,000- pound elevator counterweight pinned him inside an apartment building elevator shaft where he had gone in search of lost keys.

Matthew Joseph Smith, 29, a political consultant, was moving into a one-bedroom apartment on the sixth floor of the 3900 Tunlaw Cooperative in Northwest Washington when he dropped his keys down the elevator shaft, according to resident manager Sylvia Rackett.
