Bill to ban dog racing promoted; Supporters aim to shut down tracks

A bill known as the Dog Protection Act would make New Hampshire
the 35th state in the nation to ban greyhound racing - but the first
to do so while shutting down active racetracks. The other states
either never allowed racing or banned it after tracks had closed.
The distinction could be the sticking point as lawmakers prepare
to debate the issue. Concerns about inhumane conditions for the
thousands of dogs that live and race at the state's three tracks have
dog-racing opponents hopeful that the Legislature will pass the bill,
which calls for racing to be eliminated by mid-2009.
