Concord; Jury convicts Knickerbocker in baby death; Manslaughter verdict carries 15-30 years

A jury found George Knickerbocker guilty of manslaughter yesterday, but it acquitted him of second-degree murder in the 1983 death of his girlfriend's 5-week-old son. The verdict means Knickerbocker, 46, will spend the next 15 to 30 years in prison, instead of facing the life sentence he could have received if convicted of murder.

The verdict brings an end to a case that had gone unsolved for more than two decades. Denise Dow, the victim's mother, who was largely responsible for the state's decision to re-open the case, wept and embraced family members as the verdict was read.
