NEWPORT -- Constance Howell, 86, died Dec. 1, 2004, at Woodlawn Manor in Newport, where she had been a resident for more than three years. She waged a battle with respiratory and heart ailments and the progression of Alzheimer's disease. She was surrounded by her family.

Born Oct. 15, 1918, in Boston to Reginald Freeman and Edith (Julian) Howell, Constance had an early and lifelong enthusiasm for painting, music and athletics. She moved to West Hartford, Conn., with her family and studied art at the conservatory and taught Sunday School at St. John's Episcopal Church.
