Money market mutual funds are on the rise

Alfred Foster only uses a bank for a checking account, preferring to stash his cash in a high-interest money market fund that is part of his brokerage account.

"Don't do business with a bank if you want to make money," said Foster, 72, of Duxbury, who's been investing for 15 years and says he earns 6 to 7 percent on his money market fund.

Rates on many money market funds are at their highest levels in seven years, and could be headed even higher in the coming months.
