Dance has been the focal point of Sharon Gersten Luckman's life since she was a little girl.

"My mother was a dance teacher, and I got to participate in her class, even though I was younger than all the other students," said Luckman, who fondly remembers her mother cooking dinner while wearing a leotard and tights.

"The whole dance experience was enmeshed throughout my entire childhood and, later, interwoven throughout everything in my life," added Luckman, who, as executive director of Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation since 1992, has seen the organization expand in multiple ways.
