Early on, would-be publisher Jeffrey Kittay had a tough time
explaining what this new magazine called Lingua Franca was going to
be.
It would be for academics and about academics but not by
academics, he told people. It would "bring out the sexiness and
juiciness of academic life," a phrase that produced considerable head-
scratching. It would be as lively as a professor who's had a few
beers with a colleague, not as deadly as a professor drafting a
departmental memorandum; it would reflect what Kittay calls "the late-
night phone call discourse rather than the Monday morning faculty
