Any performance of Arnold Schoenberg's "Gurrelieder" is bound to be special. "Gurrelieder" is a work that concert-goers likely will hear only once or twice in a lifetime. Indeed, when I first heard this monumental score with the Boston Symphony Orchestra led by Seiji Ozawa in August 1974 at Tanglewood, no one I encountered had ever heard it in concert. The only other BSO performances took place in the spring of 1979.
