Alwin Nikolais, 82, a pioneering choreographer and composer who blended music and dance in a career that spanned more than 50 years, died of cancer May 8 at a hospital in New York. He lived in Manhattan.

As a choreographer, he treated dance not only as movement, but also as a theatrical event in which lighting and sound, and costumes and props were of crucial importance.

In 1963, he became the first choreographer to use a Moog synthesizer. Some critics wrote that his resulting work was abstract and both dehumanized and "androgynized" his dancers "so they evoked primal emotional responses." ...
