Richard Strauss's next to last opera, "Die Liebe der Danae" ("The Love of Danae"), lies outside the enchanted circle of his greatest works and thus is seldom performed. Cpo's excellent new version, recorded live last year in Kiel, Germany, provides a welcome opportunity to hear a work of considerable merit. Before his death in 1929 the poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Strauss's great collaborator on "Der Rosenkavalier" and other works, offered the composer a sketch of "Danae." But it was not until the early years of World War II that Strauss took up the scenario, using an inferior libretto ...
