The new Keck Telescope in Hawaii - the world's largest optical and
infrared telescope - has had its full capabilities tested for the
first time, revealing unprecedented detail in an image of the most
distant known galaxy in the universe.
The infrared image shows a galaxy in the constellation Lynx, near
the Big Dipper, that is estimated to be 12 billion light-years away.
This means the light has traveled 12 billion years (at the speed of
light, 5.9 trillion miles a year) to reach Earth. When it left on
this journey, the universe was only 10 percent to 25 percent of its
current age.
