Bunsen burner caused middle school fire

Hundreds of teachers and students were evacuated from Hanson Middle School after a fire broke out in the science wing.

A hot Bunsen burner placed inside a storage closet was blamed for yesterday's fire, which was considered minor. It was put out by the sprinkler system. Several fire engines responded to the scene as a precaution.

"The sprinklers did their jobs," Hanson Fire Chief Allen Hoyt said.

The call came into the fire department at about noon. Firefighters and police from both Whitman and Hanson showed up at the school. The towns share a regional school system so mutual aid is mandatory ...
