Child sexual abuse by priests - and increasing public awareness of it - are creating a crisis of low morale among clergy and mistrust among parishioners that the Roman Catholic Church has not seen in centuries, according to Andrew M. Greeley, the sociologist, novelist and Catholic priest. He estimates that more than 2,000 priests may have committed such crimes during the last quarter-century.
