SCITUATE - John E. Bates, 72, of Scituate, an employee of United
Parcel Service for 28 years, died Sunday at home. Mr. Bates retired
in 1986. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, serving in the
Signal Corps.
He was a member of the North River Athletic Club.
Mr. Bates enjoyed Irish "sea mossing," an industry started in
Scituate in the 19th century by Irish immigrants who harvested the
sea lichen carrageen and turned it into a thickening agent for
puddings and beer fermentation. He worked in the trade beginning when
he was seven years old and continued until 1998.
