WEYMOUTH - Retired U.S. Army Col. Robert Sawtelle has been awarded three medals by the Soviet and Russian governments for his contributions to the Allies during World War II, but his own country has never given his unit the recognition he feels it deserves.

Sawtelle, of Weymouth, formerly of Boston and Quincy's Merrymount section, spent nearly three years in the Persian Gulf Command, a force of about 30,000 American soldiers who supplied their Soviet allies on the Russian front with equipment and resources from Baghdad, Tehran and Cairo.
