Was Sir Neville Chamberlain, British prime minister from 1937 to 1940, the ultimate international "wimp"? Does he deserve to be tagged the craven appeaser that common wisdom has held him to be these past 55 years?

If one accepts the premises of a flurry of aspersions in the press lately, one would certainly so conclude.
