HISTORY

Stoughton, originally a part of Dorchester, was named for William Stoughton, lieutenant governor of Massachusetts in the mid-18th century. At the start of the American Revolution, patriots gathered at Doty's Tavern to declare solidarity against England, leading residents to call their town the birthplace of American liberty. The local patriots signed a document called the Suffolk Resolves, which were taken by Paul Revere to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia.
