For the first time in its 193-year history, the Library of
Congress is proposing to charge the general public for a broad array
of information services - a plan that has raised alarms in the
publishing industry and among library organizations.
The library, the largest in the world, has asked Congress to allow
it to charge users for such new high-technology services as computer
access to the contents of its 100 million-item collection and for
searches of commercial electronic databases.

delivery and for special events and programs held ...
