E-town professor pens book on dissent in Civil War South
A few years ago, an odd fact in the memoirs of a Civil War general
caught the eye of Elizabethtown College English professor David
Downing.
Among the topics Maj. Gen. Grenville Mellen Dodge wrote about was
his time as commander of the XVI Corps under Maj. Gen. William T.
Sherman during the latter's famous march from Atlanta to the sea,
which left a 60-mile wide swath of devastation in its wake and helped
sound the Confederacy's death knell.
To Downing's astonishment, Dodge noted that the cavalry honor
