Thurgood Marshall's Legacy

Juan Williams's wonderfully interesting piece {Outlook, Jan. 21} about Thurgood Marshall is correct that "white lawyers and legal scholars" questioned Justice Marshall's competence in "tax law and other complicated areas of federal jurisprudence." They vastly underestimated his competence.

Last year at a securities conference, something similar happened in a speech by a Chicago lawyer, and I was obliged to write a correcting letter, which was graciously accepted by the speaker. I quote the letter I wrote:
