Turn over a new Leif in the autumn sky
|
This is a week of celebrating courageous and historic voyages. By
presidential proclamation since 1964, Oct. 9 is officially Leif
Ericsson Day. Ericsson was a leader of Viking expeditions who may
have been the first European to reach North America, in 1000 A.D.,
almost 500 years before Christopher Columbus. Most of the
information concerning Ericsson's discovery of the New World, or
"Vinland," as he called it, are referenced only in Norse sagas.
However, there are other celestial landmarks in our night sky that
have persisted as navigational tools and as subjects of Norse legend.
