Aygul Sidayeva was hesitant to summon songs of the homeland her
mother sang while rocking the cradle.
"If I start, I won't get through them," Sidayeva, 45, said through
an interpreter, her eyes moistening.
Home for Sidayeva's Turkish-speaking mother was a region of
Georgia called Meskhetia, near the Black Sea. Her mother called it
home even though she left when she was 7, never to return.
It was November 1944, and Stalin had it in for the Meskhetian
Turks. Soviet authorities packed them into unheated railroad cars and
