Reindeer Rules Aim to Keep Alaska's Herd Together

If you are interested in owning a reindeer -- a real, Alaskan reindeer with Russian lineage -- the government has issued new rules you have to play by.

The Interior Department's Bureau of Indian Affairs issued a final rule this month that sets out detailed procedures for buying and transferring Alaskan reindeer and reindeer products. The goal is preserving this small but significant symbol of native Alaskan culture that has been regulated since passage of the Reindeer Act of 1937.

It follows years of consideration and a series of legal challenges.
