Cloister chorus returns to roots

Members of the Ephrata Cloister Chorus have had a summer to remember, thanks to a 16-day tour of Germany and Switzerland that included seven performances.

Cathie Oliphant, manager of the chorus, said the tour focused on historic places that had an impact on the people who became the religious emigrants to Pennsylvania.

"Each of the concerts was in a place that was significant to the Cloister," Oliphant said.

Founded by Conrad Beissel in 1732, the Ephrata Cloister was one of this country's earliest communal societies, known for its calligraphy, printing and music.
