Prosecution: Burned man was 'puppet' of Burnside ; Murder trial continues

Derek H. Burnside used his power over crack addict James Bell, a Lancaster prosecutor told jurors Monday, and Bell is dead because of it.

Assistant District Attorney Todd Brown presented the prosecution's opening statements in the trial of Burnside, 23, who is accused of setting Bell on fire Dec. 22, 1998, with Bell's permission, in exchange for crack.

Bell died Jan. 31, 1999, from complications from severe burns to both legs.

Prosecutors are asking the jury to return a second-degree murder conviction against Burnside, who is charged with murder, arson, recklessly endangering another person ...
