Illusions of grandeur

The expression "doing a lot with a little" certainly applies to
the striking, three-dimensional illusions created by the wall
painting technique referred to as trompe l'oeil (pronounced TROM-
loy).
Wall painting dates back to the beginning of man, but it wasn't
until the Italian Renaissance that architects and artists developed
and mastered the principles of linear perspective. This knowledge
enabled them to replicate lifelike, three-dimensional objects on the
flat surfaces of buildings, on both the interior and exterior.
