Island had colorful history long before nuclear plant arrived; Three Mile Island has had numerous names and owners over the years. Tobacco and watermelon have been grown there - and some natural disasters have hit.

Three Mile Island will forever be world infamous for what happened
on March 28, 1979, at a spanking new nuclear reactor.
But the island in the Susquehanna has a long, colorful past,
replete with other disasters, although of the natural kind.
Beginning in the Colonial era, Lancaster County residents have
periodically owned the island and figure prominently in its greatest
tales of lore.
So discovered Elaine Huber, a Landisville woman whose great-great
uncle farmed the island and died there when swept off the bow of a
flatboat during a 1910 flood.
