William Reynolds: the first man to recognize the last continent

Lancastrians who are all but forgotten today were first to experiment with steam navigation in America, first to transmit the human voice from sea to land, and first to recognize the coastline of Antarctica.

The Antarctica connection is today's primary subject.

Lancastrian William Reynolds and a fellow sailor spotted Antarctica, the seventh and last continent to be "discovered,'' on Jan. 16, 1840. From the rigging of their ship, they saw three mountains at a great distance.
