'Mikado' makeover; Fulton production puts swinging twist on Gilbert and Sullivan classic

Marc Robin's enthusiasm is obvious when he discusses "Hot Mikado,'' calling it "a good time" and "a huge dance show.'' The production, a swing-era update of Gilbert and Sullivan's 1885 operetta "The Mikado," takes to the boards of the Fulton Opera House March 11-28.

For many theater devotees, Gilbert and Sullivan's lilting musical style and catchy lyrics mean an evening of witty entertainment. For others, the duo's sing-song style and at times campy characters are an acquired taste. And then there's the "O" word - as in "operetta," close to "opera.'' That thrills some folks, scares off others.
