Bright and beautiful BAKELITE; Local woman turns colorful plastics into lucrative business

They look like plastic vases in fruit punch colors _ pineapple and
kiwi and cherry.
Some are big enough to hold a fat bunch of daffodils. Others are
slender enough for only a few violets.
"They're bracelet tubes," Elaine Pottberg explains, "and ring
tubes." Bakelite bracelet and ring tubes, to be exact. Cut into
slices, polished and sometimes carved, they graced the wrists and
fingers of fashionable women in the '30s.
Pottberg scooped up the tubes and other Bakelite pieces at an
auction 17 years ago, at the site of a former Bakelite factory in New
York City.
