Fishers back in Penn's Woods; Believed out of the state since the 1920s, crafty predators are now back in force

The last known native fisher in Pennsylvania was shot for stealing
chickens in the Bird-in-Hand area of Lancaster County in 1896,
according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
Marcia Bonta, a naturalist, writer friend who lives on 648-
forested acres of heaven near Penn State, relates in her book,
"Appalachian Summer", that the last known Pennsylvania fisher was
trapped in Holtwood, Lancaster County, in 1921.
She further notes that the authors of "Mammals of the Eastern
United States" credit Earl L. Poole with finding fisher tracks in
