TWO WEEKS in Paris had been on our to-do list this summer, but
the time just never opened up. We spent a weekend in Wilmington
instead.
You're thinking, Wilmington? Delaware? Isn't that just a sign
on I-95 to let you know you're making progress on the trip from
Washington to New York?
Oh, I had my preconceptions too. I grew up in Philadelphia,
just 30 miles from Wilmington. It was common knowledge that a big
chemical corporation named Du Pont was headquartered there. Outside
of that, Wilmington's significance was on a par with Manassas before
