At the dedication of Franklin College in 1787, Benjamin Rush discussed the grand design that he, along with the college's namesake and other influential Philadelphians and Lancastrians, had for Lancaster's first institution of higher learning.

The Philadelphia physician said Franklin College (a predecessor of Franklin & Marshall) would break down "the partition wall which has long separated the English and German inhabitants of the State."
