Sondheim canon fodder for Ephrata director, fans; 'A Little Night Music' opens Thursday in place of 'Follies.'

Ephrata Performing Arts Center Artistic Director Edward R. Fernandez said he didn't start out to present the entire Stephen Sondheim musical canon.

It just worked out that way.

Being a "Passion"ate Sondheim buff, Fernandez just followed his heart.

He acted in Sondheim's "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" at Ephrata in 1989. Fellow director Harry Long did "Company" there in 1990. As director, Fernandez continued Ephrata Playhouse in the Park's Sondheim tradition with a succession of hits: "Sweeney Todd," "Sunday in the Park With George," "Passion" and "Assassins."
