For its second and final program at the Kennedy Center Opera House Friday night, the Australian Ballet tried a daring ploy - no classics, no virtuoso showcases, just a trio of contrasting works by Australian choreographers (Stephen Baynes, Graeme Murphy and Stanton Welch), all virtually unknown in this country.

If the major aim was to show that there is enough talent and skill among home-grown choreographers to make a respectable showing by international standards, the point was clinched. The company had already demonstrated, with its staging of Rudolf Nureyev's "Don Quixote" at the start ...
