Why Lancaster pops up on maps of the Lewis and Clark expedition

As the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition draws near,
Lancastrians are noticing more and more references to Lancaster's
peripheral part in the journey that radically altered the way
Americans thought about their country.
As part of a comprehensive survey of the expedition, the July 8
issue of Time magazine included a map of Lewis and Clark's primary
stops. Lancaster was on the map, without explanation, as Lancastrian
Barney Martin noted.
On a summer trip, Ray Betzner and his family spotted a similar map
at the Lewis & Clark National Historic Interpretive Center in Great
