Democrat Bruce Beardsley kept the pressure on Republican Gibson C. Armstrong Thursday night during the candidates' one debate before the July 16 special election to fill the unexpired term of former state Rep. John E. Barley.

Armstrong, a Strasburg resident and former Marine captain, chose a spartan approach, emphasizing from the beginning his leadership abilities, his conservative attitude toward government and his local roots.
