As the value of the steamboat declined, Robert Fulton lost stature

Robert Fulton is one of many "famous" Lancastrians who is not so
well known outside this region. George Ross, Thaddeus Stevens and
John Reynolds are others. Charles Demuth, contrarily, might be better
known outside Lancaster than inside.
That's because Demuth's paintings live in many museums and art
books, while the accomplishments of Fulton, Ross, Stevens and
Reynolds have been relegated to history books.
