Church: Rethink policy on pedophilia

The worst thing the U.S. Roman Catholic Church leaders meeting with Pope John Paul II could have done regarding the scandal over pedophile priests was nothing.

Instead the cardinals, with the blessing of the pope, did the second worst thing: They waffled.

At the Vatican meeting last week, the pope called pedophilia a crime and "an appalling sin," and the assembled cardinals sympathized with victims of priestly pedophilia and said serial pedophiles should be discharged from the church.

But church leaders stopped short of condemning single acts of pedophilia or fellow cardinals and bishops who ...
