Thaddeus Stevens focus of weekend

Supporters of Thaddeus Stevens, Lancaster's Civil War-era legislator, will gather by his grave Thursday to mark the 210th birthday of the man who fought for public education and against slavery and helped establish the Republican Party.

The grave-side ceremony, at 4:30 p.m. at Shreiner-Concord Cemetery on West Chestnut and North Mulberry streets, is the first of several scheduled events commemorating Stevens and his housekeeper, Lydia Hamilton Smith.

Seminars will be held Saturday at Gettysburg College and Sunday at the Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology.
