Gun salute; Local shooters aim to keep past alive by firing old military rifles in contests

Tom Brooks is lying on the frozen ground outside Mount Joy on a
recent Sunday afternoon, firing off 50 rounds with a M1 Garand, a
wood and steel rifle that Gen. George Patton called "the greatest
battle implement every devised."
On the ground next to him, Bill Stanley tucks an AR-15 rifle, the
revolutionary firearm with plastic and aluminum parts that fought the
war in Vietnam and remains today the standard issue of U.S. soldiers.
Their firearms are separated by generations, but the two men share
a common fascination with military rifles.
