Editor's note: This is the first of two articles examining a report on resident Canada geese recently released by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

The sweet calls of Canada geese are considered by many to be the sound of autumn.

Time was, when you heard these calls from October through November, you'd look skyward and spot long, V-shaped groups of geese pointed toward Maryland.
