"MADAME BUTTERFLY" has been with us, in one form or another,
for about a century. She began as a magazine short story and is now
ending a run at the Kennedy Center as "Miss Saigon," her most recent
incarnation. The story is always essentially the same: An American
serviceman, on duty in Asia, marries an Asian woman, impregnates and
abandons her. The final question is what will happen to the wife and
child. The answer is different in each retelling.
