Two-Time Nobel Winner Linus Pauling Dies at 93
|
Linus Pauling, 93, a brilliant and controversial scientist who
won a Nobel Prize for chemistry for the work he did in his
laboratory and a Nobel Prize for peace for the work he did outside
it, died Aug. 19 at his ranch in Big Sur, Calif. He had cancer.
Pauling was one of only two persons - the other was Marie Curie
- to win two Nobel Prizes, and he was the only person to win two
unshared prizes.
He also was among a handful of contemporary scientists whose
names are almost universally known outside the scientific community.
