PHOTOGRAPHY was but an infant art when first it learned to lie.
Manipulators of lens and film have always called it searching for a
higher truth; some of the earliest and best of them are on exhibit
at the National Portrait Gallery.
Even Civil War photographers sometimes faked scenes or moved
bodies around to improve a composition, but it wasn't until the dawn
of the 20th century that artists began to see the camera in a new
light. These experimenters, mostly Americans, called themselves
"pictorialists" and/or Photo-Secessionists, and set out to win
photography a place among the fine arts.
