The Spanish dazzler Mariano Fortuny (1838-1874) painted "The
Choice of a Model" when the French impressionists were just getting
started. They hated this kind of art. They hated its reliance on
narrative, its technical tricks, its rampant commercialism, its
backward-looking stance. Today, however, Fortuny's little painting at
the Corcoran Gallery of Art feels rather prophetic. What it predicts
is Las Vegas.
