Flea Market Gets Go-Ahead; Appeals Board Allows Project Despite Protests

To the dismay of some Elkridge residents, the Howard County Board of Appeals unanimously agreed to allow the old Elkridge drive-in to reopen as a flea market next year.

Charu Mehta, a Columbia geriatrician, sought a special zoning exception from the board to open a weekend flea market on five acres of the 17-acre site near Route 1 and Bonnie View Lane. Mehta said proceeds from the market would go toward property taxes and senior-assisted housing that she and her husband plan to build on the property in about five years.
