New Battles Fought Over Civil War Site; Leesburg Seeks to Buy 50 Acres to Finish Balls Bluff Tract

Having so far failed in their efforts to preserve a Civil War fort, Leesburg officials have turned their attention to expanding the Balls Bluff National Battlefield Park.

The 173-acre regional park in Leesburg, owned and operated by the Northern Virginia Park Authority, encompasses most of the site of the 1861 Battle of Balls Bluff and the Balls Bluff National Cemetery.

Leesburg officials want to expand the park by 50 acres to include all the original battlefield and have proposed applying for a state grant to buy the wooded, uninhabited land from a private owner.
