For years, the British public used to cheer themselves up by
making fun of Lord Longford. One of the great joys of this was that
there was never any danger of the tank running dry; there'd always be
some brand-new absurdity to feed on. The challenge facing anyone
seeking to dramatise Longford is to look beyond the absurd. Here,
Peter Morgan's Longford (Thursday, Channel 4) proved to be a triumph.
He had managed to produce a perfectly shaded portrait that never
sought to steer viewers in any particular direction but constantly
